Public Question Time at County Council Meetings

To give people in Suffolk more opportunities to have a say in our decision-making and encourage people to get involved, Suffolk County Council has introduced a 'Public Questions' session at each meeting of the full County Council.

Anyone living in Suffolk, or registered to vote in the county, will be able to put a question to a member of the Cabinet about any matter within the council's responsibility or any matter that the council is able to influence.

Questions must be received in writing by 10am on the Friday before the meeting ( Click here for meeting dates). If you have said that you would like to put your question in person, you will be invited to attend the meeting.

What can I ask about?
Your question must be about something within the Council's responsibilities, or something the Council is able to influence.

It must not be defamatory or offensive, or require us to disclose confidential information.

If your question is essentially the same as one that has been answered at a Public Questions session during the previous six months, we will not take it again but will send you a copy of the earlier answer.

How will questions be answered?
Questions will be answered in writing by Cabinet members. These written answers will be circulated in the council chamber before the start of the meeting. This gives questioners time to consider the answer before the Question Time agenda item is reached.

20 minutes will be set aside for the Question Time item and questions will be taken in the order they were received. At the appropriate time, the Chairman will ask the questioner whether the written answer provided is clear and whether they wish to ask a supplementary question arising from the answer.
