functions which have the broad aim to promote prosperity and
development while protecting and improving our natural and historic
environment.
Role and aims

- Supporting sustainable growth in Bury St Edmunds, Ipswich and
the wider Haven Gateway
- Supporting the economic and social regeneration in Lowestoft
and rural areas
- Providing public transport to meet accessibility needs
affordably
- Reducing casualties on Suffolk roads
- Supporting the ‘Creating the Greenest County’ initiative
- Developing an integrated coast defence strategy
- Delivering waste solutions which are both environmental good
practice and affordable
Key activities
- Commissioning and leadership of Economy, Skills and Environment
strategies and policies, including strategic client roles.
- Commissioning and decommissioning service provision: defining
the required service provision and providing the required
specialist input to procurement
- Setting the standards for delivery and managing performance to
ensure they are met, drawing input from the knowledge and analytics
team and the sourcing, procurement and contact management teams as
appropriate
- Financial allocation and management across priorities within
the service area
- Accountability for service specific statutory roles and
functions (including health and safety)
- Service-specific horizon-scanning to anticipate service
developments
- Specialist input to service-specific policy development
- Driving performance improvement in the service
- Dialogue with portfolio holders – providing advice, briefing
and support
- Leading on service-specific partnerships
- Leading services related projects and programmes,
- Dialogue with service regulators
- Contributing to the corporate agenda and issues
Services that are delivered by in-house staff are led by a
Service Director.
