Many people can continue to live in their own home if
adaptations are made to support them.
These may be small adaptations such as grab rails by doors,
baths and steps, stair rails or more major adaptations like
stairlifts, concrete ramps or ground floor facilities.
Minor Adaptations
After your assessment the assessor may recommend minor
adaptations. In most cases they will be able to arrange for the
work to be done. If your home is owned by the local Council or a
Housing Association they may do the work.
Major Adaptations
Depending on your assessed need, the Occupational Therapist may
be able to get advice or recommend a major adaptation. This
can be a lengthy and complex procedure. The provision and funding
of a major adaptation depends whether you own your house or you are
the tenant of a housing association, the local council or a private
landlord. Subject to a financial assessment you may have to pay
towards the cost of the work through a Disabled Facilities
Grant.
The Occupational Therapist will be able to give advice based on
your individual circumstances or you maybe able to get advice from
your local District Council Home Improvement Agency.
Rehousing
If you are have difficulty in your present home you may want to
consider moving to a more suitable property, the Occupational
Therapist can discuss all the options with you and support your
application to your District Council or a Housing Association. If
you are buying a property, the Occupational Therapist can advise
you on possible adaptations which may help you.
