Home Care

Home First is designed to provide an extended assessment and re-ablement service to people who have not had care services before or require care on discharge from hospital.

The service is directly provided by Suffolk County Council’s Home First carers, the service is normally for a period of six weeks although it can end sooner if you no longer need it or if a longer term service is more suitable for you.

Home First is a time limited service aimed at helping you maximise your independence. Carers work with you to help you redevelop your ability to undertake your personal care tasks for example:

  • to get up and out of bed and dressed or undressed and into bed
  • to wash, shave, wash your hair
  • with toilet requirements
  • with eating or drinking
  • with medication or other agreed health related tasks.

The service will also support you, where appropriate, to find other agencies, which could link with you to provide you with wider community support e.g. At Home library service or befrienders.

As well as providing care and support to you, we may also provide help to a person already looking after you at home, for example, a friend or relative, or carer.

What happens if I need care beyond 6 weeks?

If you need care beyond the initial 6 weeks, Suffolk County Council will arrange for a private agency to continue this work.
