Day care services are for those people who have been assessed
as being frail or at risk, and who prefer to continue living in
their own homes but need some support during the day.
Not only does it allow for them to participate in a range of
activities as well as receiving personal care, these services can
also help carers by giving them a break from their caring tasks.
The aims of day care services for older people are to:
- assist people to remain in their own homes;
- contribute to rehabilitation where people have a debilitating
illness;
- promote social stimulation and prevent isolation;
- promote the maintenance of daily living skills;
- provide a resource for social care and health;
- provide specialist care for people with dementia;
- provide support and information to carers.
Our services are designed to improve or maintain quality of
life, to promote independence, facilitate friendships, provide
social contact and meet individual needs. A wide range of social
and leisure activities are available at each day care centre.
Day centres can be run by county council care services
or private and voluntary organisations. Each day centre has a
designated catchment area so that it provides a service to people
living in that locality. There are a number of units providing day
care for older people in Suffolk and is provided in a variety of
settings (e.g. stand alone large day centres and units attached to
residential units) in both urban and rural areas. Some of these
units have specialist days for older people with dementia.
Transport is also provided if necessary either through a minibus
or a taxi service. Pick up times vary depending on locations.
Lunch will be provided at all day care centres at a small cost.
Hot and cold refreshments are also available throughout the
day.
The Review of Older People’s Local Authority Day Services
Changes to Day Care services in Suffolk: Cabinet 16th January
2007 (Word, 385Kb)
Changes to Day Care services in Suffolk: Scrutiny 22nd March
2007 (Word, 125Kb)
As the two reports indicate, on the 16th January
2007, the Cabinet agreed to purchase day care activities for
more people from the independent and community sector and that the
councill will no longer directly provide day services for older
people. This will be phased over a 15 month period as indicated in
the timetable. Alongside this process we are engaging with existing
and new providers about the type of day activities that our
customers are telling us they want to participate in , so that they
can remain at home as long and independently as possible.
Suffolk County Council is currently reviewing the way it charges
for Day Care Services.
