Private fostering

Welcome to the private fostering page of Suffolk County Council.

On this page you will find relevant and updated information relating to the national picture on private fostering and the local arrangements within Suffolk County Council.

The Children (Private Arrangements for Fostering) Regulations 2005 & the National Minimum Standards for Private Fostering 2005 have focused the attention of councils and local safeguarding boards on the importance of ensuring the welfare of privately fostered children and providing support & advice for parents and private foster carers.

The Suffolk Private Fostering Policy defines private fostering and outlines the Local Authority duties towards privately fostered children and the procedures in Suffolk.

If you are a parent or a private foster carer or any one involved in making an arrangement for a child or young person to live with someone who is not a close family member, the law says you need to inform your local council in advance of the arrangements taking place.
