Why do children need fostering

Children needing fostering can be any age from new-born babies to teenagers. Some may have a learning or physical disability, or they may be brothers and sisters who want to stay together.

There are many reasons why children cannot live with their own families including abuse, neglect, addiction, physical or mental health issues, and family breakdown.

Often children just need a break, while some may need more long-term care. We try to put families back together, but there is rarely a quick-fix solution and the child’s needs must come first.

Often a child or young person will be removed from the family for their own safety; then Suffolk County Council becomes responsible for their welfare.

Reasons for a child needing foster care may include:

  • Ellie’s single mum is a drug addict and there is no one else to look after her
  • Daniel’s dad is in prison and his mum has become depressed
  • Cameron has told his teacher that he is being abused
  • Ayesha keeps running away from home and her parents have refused to have her back.
