The Children Act 2004 requires each Local Authority to
establish a Local Safeguarding Children Board (LSCB)
LSCBs are the key statutory mechanism for agreeing how the
relevant organisations in each local area will co-operate to
safeguard and promote the welfare of children, and for ensuring the
effectiveness of what they do. They replace Area Child Protection
Committees, and in Suffolk inherit an important programme of
initiatives and a well-established child protection system.
LSCBs are, however, very different in many significant
respects. In particular they are statutory bodies with a much
wider remit and significant new responsibilities, and they are
required to act with independence and authority in respect of the
work of all organisations whose staff come into contact with
children and young people, their parents and carers.
