Lowestoft - Blyford

Blyford was opened in North Lowestoft in May 1991.  It is situated within easy reach of local shops and a short journey from Lowestoft town centre.

As well as providing care for older people, it also provides specialised care for people with dementia.

Blyford, a single story building,  consists of three “Houses”.  Each House has two groups of 6 single bedrooms with en suite toilet/washing facilities.  Of the 36 rooms 12 are registered for older people -mainstream over 65, 23 for older people with dementia over 65. There is another room for a resident who is over 65 with a mental disorder.

All rooms have TV and telephone points and Residents have the use of lounge, dining and bathing areas, in addition to their own bedroom.

There is also a Day Centre, open Monday to Friday, and residents are welcome to join in with some Day Centre activities.

The Home has a group of trained and experienced staff who are led by a qualified manager.  A manager is on duty 24 hours a day and members of staff are available to ensure the well-being of residents.  Care staff are there to help during the night.

All staff, including the senior team and carers, are trained to high standards.  Carers are working towards the NVQ level II.  External and in-house training takes place regularly.  This training is linked to the needs of the carer and is relevant to the client group.  Each member of staff has regular supervision and an annual performance appraisal.

Each resident is allocated a Key Worker, who helps with producing a detailed Care Plan and who takes special interest in the resident to ensure individual needs are met.

Freshly cooked meals are provided by the Catering Team, who will also adapt dishes to meet individual’s needs.  Meal times are flexible and meals can be served in the Resident’s room.  Drinks and snacks are available at all times.

Housekeeping staff are responsible for maintaining high standards of cleanliness.  As well as bedding and towels, all personal laundry can also be washed at the Home.

Residents are able to make full use of the local Community Health Services such as the Doctor, District Nurse and Dentist.

A range of activities and entertainments are available in the Home and in the local community.

A complaints procedure is in place and a form “Having Your Say” is available in the Home should residents or their families wish, or have reason, to make comments, compliments or complain.

Blyford’s philosophy is very much person centred, recognising “each Resident as an individual with a past, present and future”.
