In this section, you can find information about housing and
accommodation. In particular, you can find information about:
The United Nations Declaration of Human Rights includes a "right
to adequate housing". The United Nations claim that:
"This right is universally recognized by the community of
nations ..... Adequate housing is defined within the Global
Strategy as meaning: adequate privacy, adequate space, adequate
security, adequate lighting and ventilation, adequate basic
infrastructure and adequate location with regard to work and basic
facilities-all at a reasonable cost."
There are a number of ways that these expectations can be met.
Many people are able to sort out and obtain housing for themselves
from their own resources. Some people want and are able to take
full responsibility for this; others may need help and advice. This
help and advice could include:
- finding somewhere to live;
- getting help with paying for your accommodation;
- getting support and care to cope with living on your own;
- learning with assistance and so progressing to more independent
housing.
In Suffolk a number of different organizations are concerned
with meeting these expectations. Some (like the seven district and
borough councils, the county council and Suffolk Supporting People)
have legal responsibilities, whilst others (such as voluntary or
charitable organisations, private landlords or building societies)
get involved out of choice.
