Safety Notice-
Scooters
Suffolk Trading Standards have held and tested a consignment of
children’s scooters being imported via the Port of
Felixstowe.
The tests on the scooters found that the scooters did not
satisfy relevant essential safety requirements and contravened the
Toy Safety Regulations (1995).
A key safety concern was the diameter of the wheels in that they
were smaller than permitted as being safe. . The danger of
this is if a child were to hit a hole in the ground, they are more
likely to be thrown off a scooter with small wheels.
In addition, the diameter of the handles of the scooters
should be 40mm or more, however on this sample they were only 22mm.
The narrow handles increase the chance of impalement if a child
were to fall onto them.
Toy scooters labelled as intended for children with a body mass
of 20kgs or less do not need a braking system. Other toy scooters
shall have at least one braking system which shall operate on the
rear wheel and which should effectively and smoothly reduce the
speed without coming to an abrupt stop.
The scooters were destroyed in Suffolk to prevent release for
general sale.
If anyone has a scooter which they feel fails to meet these
essential requirements, they should return it to the retailer
from whom it was purchased and advise their local
Trading
Standards department.
