Weights and measures

Making sure that weights and measures are accurate.

A standard for weights and measuring equipment makes sure that measures are consistent nationwide. This means that businesses can compete fairly and consumers are protected from short and inaccurate measures.

We test all measuring equipmen from optics to weighbridges. We also check the dispensing of fuel oils by tanker vehicles and petrol pumps.

We give advice to local businesses on weights and measures law. We enforce the law in a sensitive, sensible, fair and consistent manner.

The Trading Standards Laboratory offers a competitively-priced calibration service for weights and other measuring equipment used in trade and business.

Our weights calibration service is accredited to international standards by the United Kingdom Accreditation Service (UKAS) and has the capability to measure and certify the precise calibration of weights in the range 25kg to 1mg, up to and including OIML accuracy Class F1, on fully traceable UKAS Certificates of Calibration.

We are able, too, to certify the accuracy of linear and capacity measures under the Weights & Measures Act, also with traceability to national standards, such as may be required by quality management standards.

Please contact our Laboratory Manager, John Runnacles, to discuss your needs on (telephone) 01473 584288, or by email to john.runnacles@tradstan.suffolkcc.gov.uk
