New legislation: Consumer Protection from Unfair Trading
Regulations 2008
The Consumer Protection from Unfair Trading Regulations (CPRs)
implement the Unfair Commercial Practices Directive into UK law.
Subject to Government approval, it is due to come into force on 26
May 2008 and will affect all businesses that deal with
consumers.
Upon its implementation, it is likely to be the biggest change
in consumer legislation for four decades. Once in force, it will
supersede and replace existing legislation such as the Trade
Descriptions Act, price marking legislation and important sections
of the Consumer Protection Act.
The CPRs seek to move away from a prescriptive format in favour
of a general duty on businesses not to trade unfairly.
