Green Procurement Approach (pdf, 51kb)

There is considerable scope to consider environmental issues in public purchasing, within the context of the European Union procurement rules, the UK's procurement policy with value for money, and ongoing efficiency work.  Successful contractors will be expected to adhere to our environmental policy and guidance for contractors.

The UK Government Sustainable Development Strategy (Securing the Future) has committed the public sector to lead by example in delivering those objectives, since it was published in March 2005.

Sustainable procurement refers to all Policy Through Procurement issues, where public procurement is seen as a lever to achieve wider environmental, social and economic policy objectives.

Answer - A North Sea Way to Energy Efficient Regions is a new initiative led by Suffolk County Council and involves a package of support to help businesses improve their efficiency including an efficiency network, development of an environmental charter and on-site audit support.

The Suffolk Carbon Charter offers 3 different levels of accreditation to reflect your business's environmental management.  Backed by the Environment Agency and Suffolk County Council, it is designed specifically to be appropriate to the full range of SMEs (<250 FTEs), offering an accessible, high-profile means of demonstrating that you take your environmental responsibility seriously.
